One Year Ends, Another Begins

As 2026 comes to an end, it is easy to look back and measure the year by what we accomplished, what we lost, what went wrong, or what we wish we had done differently. A new year offers something more valuable than a fresh calendar: an opportunity to decide how we want to move forward.

The following are a few simple principles worth carrying into 2027, not as resolutions that disappear by February, but as reminders to guide the decisions, challenges and opportunities that come our way.

Don’t be afraid to begin again. Starting over is not the same as failing. Businesses change, careers change, relationships change, and people change. Sometimes the smartest decision is to recognize that something is no longer working and have the courage to take a different path. You do not need to have the entire road mapped out before taking the next step. Progress often begins with simply being willing to begin.

Choose growth over being right. One of the most valuable things we can carry into the new year is the willingness to learn. Sometimes growth means admitting we were wrong. Sometimes it means listening to advice we do not want to hear. Sometimes it means changing a plan we once believed was perfect. Being willing to learn makes you adaptable. The goal is not to know everything; it is to keep becoming better.

Protect your future, not just your present. A good year is not simply one in which everything goes well today. It is one in which the choices you make today create a stronger tomorrow. Build relationships. Save when you can. Plan for uncertainty. Take care of your reputation. Put important agreements in writing. Think about succession, risk and the people who will eventually carry forward what you have built. A little preparation today can prevent a great deal of difficulty tomorrow.

Leave room for the unexpected. Plans are important. So is humility to understand that plans will change. The one who refuses to adapt can become a prisoner of their own strategy. Sometimes the opportunity is hidden inside the disruption. Sometimes the setback is a redirection. Do not become so committed to a plan that you fail to recognize the opportunity standing outside of it.

Make room for people. Success can become meaningless if we reach our goals but lose the people who mattered along the way. Make time for family, friends, employees, clients and the people who supported you when things were difficult. A successful year should not only be measured by what you acquired, but who you encouraged, helped and appreciated along the way.

As 2026 closes, perhaps the best goal for 2027 is not to promise that everything will be perfect. Instead, promise that everything will be more prepared, more intentional, more adaptable and more willing to grow. Prepare for uncertainty, focus on what matters, learn from yesterday, protect tomorrow, and never be afraid to take the next step.
